What Is Silica Dust Exposure?

Silica, sometimes referred to as quartz, is a naturally occurring substance that is one of the most abundant elements in the world. It is a mineral that is found in many varieties of stone, sand and soil, and can be used in a host of different ways and products, including many building materials, food, toiletries and other products.

Its full name is Silicon Dioxide, and in its natural state it presents no danger to humans – the problems arise when it is cut, drilled, ground or broken up in any way that can lead to the tiny particles of dust being allowed to escape in to the air and then be breathed in by anyone nearby. The particles can be so small – 100 times smaller than the grains of sand you might find on a beach – that they can easily be inhaled without noticing, and it is when they enter the lungs, and remain there, that the problems can begin.

Different types of rocks, bricks and tiles contain differing amounts of silica: Sandstone is made up of approximately 70-90% silica, Granite contains around 20-45%, whereas marble and limestone contain around 2%.

When silica dust is inhaled, the particles are so small that they are not stopped by the tiny hairs that filter the air we breathe, and so they can get into the lungs themselves where they can remain and cause a range of issues including silicosis – a dreadful disease that robs sufferer of the ability to breathe properly, and lung cancer which can kill, alongside other horrible illnesses.

While the dangers of silica are widely reported, there are still many jobs that involve the risk of inhaling the dust. If suitable procedures and protective equipment are utilised then the danger can be reduced, but if people are not protected from the dust in their workplace, and they go on to develop lung disease as a result, then they are likely to be eligible to make a claim for compensation.
